Jefferson, North Carolina is the county seat of Ashe County. The town was established with the purchase of fifty acres to create a county seat upon the formation of the county in 1799, with construction of its public buildings beginning in 1800. Jefferson was the first town in the country named for Thomas Jefferson, who was to become president of the United States. The town was chartered in 1803, but not incorporated until 1854.
