Garner got its start with the coming of the North Carolina Railroad in 1847. Although people were in the area prior to that time, it was mostly grown up in cotton. The new settlement received a name in 1878, when a post office was constructed for what was then known as "Garner's Station", changed to Garner when the town was incorporated in 1883.
