The seat of Cumberland County, Fayetteville is best known as the home of Fort Bragg, a United States Army post located on the northwest part of the city. Fayetteville was settled along the Cape Fear River, with the encouragement of Wilmington merchants, who were afraid people would use the Pee Dee River, taking their goods to Charleston, South Carolina. Fayetteville was formed by the union of of Cross Creek and Campbellton, North Carolina.
