Ellenboro, North Carolina is a small town in Rutherford County. The community has its origin in the coming of the Seaboard Railroad, when it built a line from Wilmington to Rutherford, North Carolina in 1880. At the highest point along that line the settlement began. Ellenboro was named for the daughter of a Seaboard engineer, who was dying of a fever. Ellenboro is east of Forest City and northwest Boiling Springs.
