Charlotte, the county seat of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, is nicknamed the Queen City. It was named after Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg, the queen consort of King George III. It was settled in 1755 and was the site of the first gold rush in the country after a 12-year-old brought a rock home which weighed 17 pounds. The family used it as a doorstop until a jeweler pronounced it to be gold and paid the family $3.50 for it.
