Situated on the east side of the Cape Fear River in Brunswick County, Bald Head Island is accessible only by ferry from the nearby town of Southport. Cars are not permitted on the island, or its village with the same name. During the American Revolution, the island housed Fort George, a British fort. During the Civil War, Fort Holmes, a Confederate base, was built on the same redoubts. Wilmington is north of Bald Head island.
