The state of North Carolina, located on the Atlantic Seaboard, is nicknamed the Tar Heel State. Its capital is Raleigh, and it ratified the Constitution in 1840, making it the twelfth state to do so. It was important in both the Revolution and the Civil War. It was home to the Regulator Movement in the 1760s, which was a catalyst to the War for Independence. It was the second to last state to secede from the Union during the Civil War, doing so in May of 1861.
