Taos is the seat of Taos County, which, in the Native Taos language, means "place of red willows". Located in the north-central part of New Mexico, the town was established about 1615, following the Spanish conquest of the Indian Pueblo villages. Beginning around 1899, artists began to settle in Taos, creating an art colony that exists today.
