Named for the Raton Range, a 75-mile long ridge that extends east from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which is just north of the city, Raton is the seat of Colfax County, New Mexico. The community was renamed Willow Springs from 1877 to 1879, then renamed Raton in 1880. Willow Springs was a stop along the Santa Fe Trail. The city is mentioned in Jack Kerouac’s novel, On the Road.
