Situated in Torrance County, New Mexico, the city of Moriarty was named for the family of Michael Timothy Moriarty, who arrived in the area in the fall of 1887, and were the first to settle there. A post office was established in 1903, with Michael Moriarty as the first postmaster, and the railroad came through that same year, connecting Kennedy and Torrance, passing through Moriarty. In 1907, a school was built, which also served as a facility for church activities.
