The city of Lovington is the seat of Lea County, New Mexico. The community was established around the turn of the century. Its first store, known as the Jim B. Love Grocery Store, was built in 1908; it housed the post office, and Jim Love was appointed as the postmaster. Lea County was organized from parts of Chaves and Eddy counties, and Lovington was designated the county seat. Situated near the New Mexico-Texas border, Lovington is southwest of Lubbock and northwest of Midland, Texas.
