Hatch was known as Santa Barbara when it was first settled in 1851. However, attacks by Apaches led to the community being abandoned until 1853, when nearby Fort Thorn was established. When the fort closed in 1860, the town was abandoned again, to be reoccupied in 1875, at which time it was renamed for Indian fighter, Edward Hatch, who was then commander of the New Mexico Military District. Located in Doña Ana County, in south-central New Mexico, Hatch is known for its chile production.
