Founded in 1881 as a rail station for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, the city of Gallup, New Mexico was named for David Gallup, a paymaster for the railroad. Gallup, the seat of McKinley County, is the most populous city between Flagstaff, Arizona and Albuquerque, New Mexico, and is located in the middle of several Native American reservations, serving the headquarters for several tribes, including the Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, and others.
