Belen, New Mexico is in Valencia County. The city is sometimes known as “hub city” because of the Belen Cutoff of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which has resulted in an average of more than a hundred trains per day passing through Belen. The community was founded by two Spaniards, Don Diego Torres and Antonio Salazar, naming it Belen, which is Spanish for Bethlehem, in honor of the Biblical town. Belen was incorporated as a village in 1918, a town in 1940, and a city in 1966.
