Situated in south-central New Mexico, Alamogordo is the county seat of Otero County. Bordered on the east by the Sacramento Mountains, the city is the nearest to Holloman Air Force Base. The Trinity test, the first explosion of a nuclear bomb, occurred near Alamogordo. The region has been inhabited for at least eleven thousand years, although the city was founded in 1898, after the railroad extended the railway to the town.
