Formed form portions of Pilesgrove Township in 1882, Woodstown was incorporated as a borough in 1925. Woodstown is an independent municipality in Salem County, New Jersey, which is entirely surrounded by Pilesgrove Township. US Route 40 crosses the borough from east to west, and Route 45 leads from south to north. New Jersey Transit provides bus service between borough and Philadelphia on the 401 route, with local service offered on the 468 route.
