Settled in the 1720s, Warren was incorporated as a township in 1806. The township stretches from the crest of the First Watchung Mountain, across Washington Valley, to the Second Mountain and beyond, ending at the Dead and Passaic Rivers. The township used to be much larger, before the municipalities now known as North Plainfield, Green Brook, and Watchung separated from it in 1872. Warren was named for Joseph Warren, a hero of the Battle of Bunker Hill. Unincorporated community within the township include Coontown, Dockwatch Hollow, Mount Bethel, Plainfield Gardens, Round Top, Smalleytown, Springdale, Union Village, and Warrenville.
