Verona is a township in Essex County, New Jersey. Verona was once part of the Horseneck Tract, which included several of the surrounding towns, which had been purchased from the Lenni Lenape in 1702. After the Revolutionary War, the Horseneck Tract was incorporated as Caldwell Township, while the portion of it that included Verona was known as Vernon Valley. When Vernon Valley separated from Caldwell Township in 1892, that name was rejected, so Verona was chosen as an alternative, and it was incorporated as a borough. In 1902, Verona became a township. Verona is bordered by Cedar Grove Township, Montclair Township, West Orange Township, Essex Fells, and North Caldwell.
