South Brunswick, in Middlesex County, New Jersey, was formed as early as 1778 or before, and was formerly incorporated as one of the state’s initial group of townships in 1798. South Brunswick was originally known as Cross Roads, where James Whitlock built a tavern on Georges Road around 1750, and later became known as Dayton. Unincorporated communities within the township include Dayton, Deans, Heathcote, Kendall Park, Kingston, and Monmouth Junction.
