Located in New Jersey’s Gateway Region, Newark is the most populous city in the state, and the seat of Essex County. Newark is divided into five geographical wards. The city was originally founded in 1666 by Puritans from Connecticut, led by Robert Treat of the New Haven Colony. Originally formed as a township, Newark was granted a Royal Charter in 1713, and incorporated as one of New Jersey’s original group of townships in 1798. It was incorporated as a city in 1836. Due to its early use of brick as a building material, Newark became known as the "Brick City."
