Maurice River Township, in Cumberland County, New Jersey, was first formed as a precinct in 1748, and was incorporated as one of the state’s initial townships in 1798. The township includes several unincorporated communities, such as Bricksboro, Cumberland, Delmont, Dorchester, Heislerville, Leesburg, Port Elizabeth, and portions of Belleplain and Milmay. The community was developed on the site of Wahatquenak, a Lenni Lenape Native American village. The area was surveyed by John Worledge and Thomas Budd, and the community of Dorchester was laid out, although the township was not established until 1798.
