Chester Township was organized in 1799. Portions of the township were removed in 1930 to form Chester Borough, which is an independent municipality surrounded by the township. Both are in Morris County, New Jersey. Topics related to either the township or the borough are appropriate for this category. The settlements were established at a point where two Lenapetrail crossed in an area known as Black River, which was the name of the original settlement.
