Originally formed in 1866, from portions of Hanover and Pequannock townships, Boonton, New Jersey was reincorporated and became an independent town in 1867. The town was settled in 1829 during the construction of the Morris Canal and the establishment of the New Jersey Iron Company, although the original location of the town is now beneath the waters of the Jersey City Reservoir, completed in 1904. The Rockaway River flows through downtown Boonton, and includes a 25-foot waterfall.
