Merrimack is in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, and includes the villages of Thornton’s Ferry, Reed’s Ferry, South Merrimack, and Merrimack Village, formerly known as Souhegan Village, although their boundaries are no longer clear due to urban expansion. European settlers came to the area in the late 1600s, in response to a dispute between the Province of New Hampshire and the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Originally spelled Merrymac, the town was incorporated in 1746, although it included only the southern portion of the town then, that being primarily Thornton’s Ferry, with the Reed’s Ferry part of the town being added a few years later. Matthew Thornton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, lived in Merrimack, and was buried there.
