Verdi, Nevada is an unincorporated community in the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area. Verdi is immediately adjacent to the California town by that name, across the state line. Verdi was named for the Italian opera composer, Guiseppe Verdi, by Charles Crocker, the founder of the Central Pacific Railroad. Verdi was formed when the Pacific Railroad line reached its site, west of the future town of Reno. Many of its early residents had abandoned the town of Crystal Peak after learning that the railroad was going to bypass their town by nearly two miles. The town’s early economy was largely based on timber, which waned after the town and its timber stands had been destroyed by fire three times, the last in 1927. Currently, the town is a commuter town for people who work in Reno.
