Established in 1904 as an operations base for the Southern Pacific Railroad, particularly the construction of the Lucin Cutoff across the Great Salt Lake in Utah, which bypassed the town of Terrace, Utah. Originally named Bauvard, the town was renamed Montello in 1912. With the railroad’s shift from steam to diesel locomotives in the 1940s and 1950s, the town began to decline, as this made the servicing facilities at Montello obsolete. Montello is northeast from Oasis.
