Founded as a railroad town in 1905, Mina was named for Ferminia Sarras, a large landowner and prospector in the area. Closely related to Mina was the former town and train station of Sodaville, about four miles south of Mina. The Sodaville post office opened in 1882 and operated until 1917, when it was moved to Mina. Although its stations are now close, Mina was once served by the Nevada & California Railway, a division of the Southern Pacific Railroad, and the Tonopah & Goldfield Railroad. Mina is in Mineral County, in west-central Nevada. The first person in the world to be executed by lethal gas was Ge Jon a member of the Hop Sing Tong, who was convicted of murdering Tom Quong Kee in Mina on August 27, 1921. Mina is thirty-two miles southeast of Hawthorne and seventy miles northwest of Tonopah.
