The city of Mesquite, in Clark County, Nevada, was settled by Mormons in 1880. Originally known as Mesquite Flat, the town was established on the third attempt, after having been flooded twice when the Virgin River overflowed. The name of the community was shortened to Mesquite when it was incorporated in 1984. Mesquite is situated along Interstate 15, northeast of Bunkerville and southwest of Littlefield, in the northeastern corner of Clark County, with a portion of the city extending north into the southeastern corner of Lincoln County, while the eastern border of the city is the Arizona state line. Beginning as an agricultural community, Mesquite currently includes several casino resorts and golf courses.
