The unincorporated town of Eureka is the county seat of Eureka County, Nevada. The community was first settled in 1864 by a group of settlers who came from nearby Austin, after silver was discovered on nearby Prospect Peak. The town became the county seat in 1873, when the county was created from Lander, Elko and White Pine counties. The town’s economic base was mining, particularly for lead, with its largest mining concerns being the Richmond Mining Company and the Eureka Mining Company. Area attractions include the Eureka Opera House, Raine’s Market and Wildlife Museum, the Jackson House Hotel, and the Eureka Sentinel Museum, as well as the Eureka Court House, which was built in 1876.
