Alamo is an unincorporated community in the Pahranagat Valley of Lincoln County, Nevada, approximately ninety miles north of Las Vegas. Founded in 1901, the community was named for the Spanish word for poplar, in recognition of the large number of poplar trees in the area. The town’s economy is dependent mostly on ranching, although tourists traveling from Las Vegas to northern Nevada and Idaho often stop for its nearby hot springs, wildlife refuge, and Area 51. Although unincorporated, Alamo has its own police force, a volunteer fire department, and public library.
