The city of Oshkosh, Nebraska is the county seat of Garden County. The community was founded in the 1880s by cattlemen who used the area to graze their livestock, and was named for the city by that name in Wisconsin, where many of its early settlers had come from. Its post office was established in 1889, and the railroad extended its track to Oshkosh in 1908. Oshkosh was named the county seat in 1909, and incorporated in 1910. Oshkosh is situated on the North Platte River, an area that saw earlier traffic from the Mormon and Oregon trails. Oshkosh is along Highway 26, southeast of Lisco and Bridgeport, and northwest of Lemoyne and Ogallala.
