The city of Hartington is the county seat of Cedar County, Nebraska, at the state’s border with South Dakota. Platted in 1884, Hartington was named for Lord Hartington of England. Like many other towns, Hartington’s location was chosen because of the distance that a train could travel between stops to refuel and take on water, generally seven to ten miles. Hartington is seven miles from Coleridge, on the eastern edge of the Great Plains. In 1885, the county seat was moved to Hartington from St. Helena, and the county courthouse was constructed in 1892. Hartington was incorporated as a city in 1898.
