Situated at the base of the bluff that is now the center of Scotts Bluff National Monument, the city of Gering was founded in 1887, and named for Martin Gering, a local banker. It is located across the North Platte River from the city of Scottsbluff, which was founded in 1900. Gering is the county seat of Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska. The town’s first postmaster was Oscar Gardner, who also served as its first notary public. Along with Martin Gering, Gardner established the town’s first store, which sold implements and hardware. Initially part of Cheyenne County, Gering hosted the first Cheyenne County Fair, and continued to host the fair for several years after it became part of Scotts Bluff County.
