West Alton, in St. Charles County, Missouri, is a small city at the tip of a peninsula formed by the confluence of the Missouri River and the Mississippi River. The city was named for its location on the western bank of the Mississippi River, across from Alton, Illinois. Other nearby communities include Fort Bellefontaine, Black Jack, and Spanish Lake, across the Missouri River, and Portage Des Sioux, to the northwest. St. Louis is about eighteen miles to the south.
