Settled in the 1830s, the city of Walnut Grove, Missouri is in Greene County. Its post office was established in 1855. Platted in 1859, and incorporated in 1866 as Walnut Grove, it was named for a stand of black walnut trees that were growing near the town site, although the community was first known as Possum Trot, in recognition of which the city celebrates an annual Possum Trot Days.
