Officially founded in 1903, the town was settled in the late 1800s, and a Lutheran church was built there in 1871. Situated near the center of Missouri, the Morgan County town of Stover grew quickly at first, largely due to its proximity to the Rock Island Railroad. However, a portion of the town was destroyed in 1916 by a tornado. Missouri Routes 52 and 135 intersect in Stover. Nearby communities include Boylers Mill, Cole Camp, Crockerville, Glensted, Lake Creek, Pyrmont, and Versailles. Jefferson City is just under sixty miles to the northeast.
