Formed as the railroad extended its tracks through the area in 1879, the small city of Stanberry, Missouri was named for J.J. Stanberry, the original owner of the town site. Stanberry is in Gentry County, in the northwestern portion of the state, at a place where US Highway 136 and US Highway 169 intersect. Nearby communities include Alanthus Grove, Albany, Carmack, Clyde, Conception, Conception Junction, Darlington, Gentry, and Ford City. From Stanberry, the city of St. Joseph is less than fifty miles to the southwest.
