Platted in 1859, Smithton was the original county seat of Boone County, but it was later moved to Columbia, which was deemed to be more accessible. Currently, Smithton is in Pettis County, Missouri. Smithton was named either for General George R. Smith, a railroad promoter, or General Thomas A. Smith. US Highway 50 runs east and west, north of Smithton, while Spur 50 runs through the center of town, becoming Washington Street. The city is also served by Missouri Highway W. To the east of Smithton is Otterville, and Sedalia is to the west, while Beaman is northwest of the city. Columbia is sixty miles to the northeast.
