Seneca, Missouri is a small city in Newton County, in the southwestern part of the state, on the Missouri-Oklahoma border, about five miles upstream from the Grand Lake of the Cherokees, and five miles downstream from Racine. Before 1959, highway traffic to and from Oklahoma mostly followed US 60 through Seneca rather than the more famous US Route 66, which it joined about fifteen miles west of the city. Seneca was a thriving roadside stop at that time. Seneca is adjacent to West Seneca, Oklahoma. Racine is northeast of the city, Westview is east, and Dessa is southeast. Joplin is eighteen miles to the northeast.
