Situated along the Elk River in McDonald County, Missouri, the village of Noel was named for CW and WJ Noel, who owned a saw mill in the area. The community later capitalized on the Christmas theme aspect of its name and, each year, tens of thousands of Christmas cards and letters are sent to the Noel post office during the holiday season to be stamped with a postmark reading, Noel, MO - The Christmas City in the Ozark Vacation Land, a practice that became popular in the late 1940s when Kate Smith, a radio and television singer, began telling the Noel Story during her broadcasts. Surrounded by the Ozark Mountains, Noel has also become a tourist attraction and a destination for outdoor activities. Missouri Highways 59 and 90 intersect in Noel. The small community of Ginger Blue and the town of Lanagan are north and slightly east of Noel, while Pineville is northeast, Sulphur Springs is south, and Saratoga and South West City are west and slightly south of Noel. Located in southwest Missouri, the Oklahoma and Arkansas borders are near the village, and the Kansas border isn’t far away.
