The city of Lake Tapawingo is in Jackson County, Missouri. Formed in 1926 as an exclusive sports retreat and vacation haven, the community and lake were named for an Indian word meaning either “beautiful water” or “beautiful place.” Lake Tapawingo was incorporated as a city in 1962 in order to avoid annexation by Blue Springs or Independence. The city and lake is west of Blue Springs and south of Burr Oak Woods. Independence is approximately eleven miles northwest of Lake Tapawingo.
