The city of Jackson, in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, is the largest city in the Cape Girardeau-Jackson metropolitan statistical area. Beginning as a settlement on the high land between Hubble Creek and Goose Creek, the town’s first post office was established in 1814, and known as Birdstown. The name of the community was changed to Jackson in 1819, to honor Andrew Jackson, a hero of the War of 1812, and was the first town to be named for Jackson. The town was platted in 1815, at which time it was chosen as the seat of government for Cape Girardeau County. Jackson is situated along Interstate Highway 55 and Missouri Highway 72, which is also 34, and US Highway 61. Fruitland is north of Jackson, Cape Girardeau is southeast, Burfordville is west, and Millersville is northwest.
