Named for James Human, who settled the area in 1834, the city of Humansville is in Polk County, Missouri. During the American Civil War, Humansville was occupied by a garrison of one hundred and fifty Union troops. In 1862, the town was attacked by Confederate forces, but Union troops were able to hold them off. During Shelby’s Raid of 1863, Confederate troops surrounded the Union outpost, overwhelming it. Humansville was incorporated as a city in 1873, but didn’t elect its first mayor until 1886. Today, Humansville is northeast of Missouri Highway 13, and Missouri Routes 123 and V.
