The city of Greenwood, Missouri spans Jackson and Cass counties, although it is primarily in Jackson County. The community existed under that name since at least 1867, although an earlier business district was situated about a half mile northwest of the town’s current location, but was abandoned when the railroad came through after the American Civil War. The city was named by the Reverend S.B. Clark for the greenery of the elm trees in the area and, even today, the community is mostly lightly wooded, with open fields northeast of the railroad tracks. The community is situated at the southwestern edge of the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area, southeast of Lees Summit and South Lee, northwest of Pleasant Hill, and southwest of Cockrell.
