Situated in northern St. Louis County, the city of Florissant, Missouri is a second-ring suburb of St. Louis. Although the precise date of the city’s founding is uncertain, Florissant is one of the oldest settlements in Missouri, and may have been settled around the same time as St. Louis. The first civil government in Florissant was organized in 1786, at which time it was known as Fleurissant by its French settlers, and as St. Ferdinand by its Spanish rulers. The community was a small village until after World War II, when it rapidly grew to become a large suburban center, and by the late 1970s, it was the largest city in St. Louis County. Florissant is surrounded by Spanish Lake, Castle Point, Velda Village, Natural Bridge Junction, and St. Charles.
