Located in East Madison Township, Fair Play is part of Polk County, Missouri. When its post office was established in 1852, the town’s founders wanted to name the town Oakland, but that name had already been assigned to another Missouri community, so they decided to call it Fair Play. In 1884, the Kansas City Clinton & Springfield Railway extended its track to Fair Play, establishing a station there. The city is situated at Missouri Highway 32 and Route 123, south of Dunnegan, southwest of Cliquot, northwest of Stagle, and northeast of Masters and Stockton Lake.
