The city of Eureka is in St. Louis County, in central-eastern Missouri, between Peerless Park and Pacific, along Interstate 44. The Missouri Pacific Railroad was extended through the area to Franklin (now Pacific) in 1853, and Eureka was laid out as a village in 1858. As roads leading to several surrounding towns and villages led through Eureka, the village soon prospered, becoming a city in 1954. The St. Louis Children’s Industrial Farm was established in Eureka in 1898, and remains as Camp Wyman, part of Wyman Center. The city of Allentown, at the junction of I-44 and Business Loop 44, was annexed by Eureka in 1985. Now known as Six Flags St. Louis, Six Flags Over Mid-America opened in Eureka in 1971. The former town of Times Beach, the site of dioxin contamination in the 1980s, was cleaned up and reopened as Route 66 State Park, now part of the city of Eureka.
