Named for its high elevation, the city of Eminence is the county seat of Shannon County, Missouri. Eminence was founded as a frontier town next to Round Spring, but it was burned by Union troops in 1863, during the American Civil War. Rather than rebuilding at the original location, it was moved to a position central to Shannon County, and because a clear deed was available for the land. The town experienced growth when the Missouri Mining and Lumber Company established a sawmill in West Eminence. Eminence is east of Alley Spring, northwest of Munsell, northeast of Delaware, and in the center of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Missouri’s largest national park. The city is accessed trhough Missouri Routes 19 and 106.
