The small city of Chamois, in Osage County, Missouri, began as a depot on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. In 1832, more than twenty years before the settlement of the town in 1854, Dr. John M. Townley settled just southeast of the current site of Chamois, building a one-room log cabins that doubled as his medical office, later adding a room that became the area’s first school. The first building in Chamois itself was a two-story log hotel and bar, built in 1854, on the north side of the railroad tracks. Chamois is situated south of the Missouri River, and is accessed primarily through Missouri Highway 100, which becomes Missouri Avenue within the city, and by Missouri Highway 89, which is known as Cherry Street in Chamois.
