Founded in 1875, the city of Buckner, Missouri is in northeastern Jackson County, about twenty-five miles east of the Kansas-Missouri border, and three miles south of the Missouri River, although the river once flowed right through the current town site. Originally, the town was known as Buckner Hill, for an early settler who lived on a hill near the chosen town site. The first house built in Buckner was constructed by John T. Cobb, who kept a general store there from 1871 to 1877, when he moved to Independence. The site upon which Buckner was built was part of the Santa Fe Trail, currently known as US Highway 24. Levasy is east of Buckner, while Sibley is to the north.
